News of South Lakes Safari Zoo’s closure has emerged today. I know many animal lovers locally will be relieved but others will be saddened by the loss of the zoo.
It was certainly a popular attraction when it first opened but it has had a very troubled past since 24-year-old zookeeper Sarah McClay was tragically killed in 2013 with lots of serious questions about safety and animal welfare.
It is important that the closure is well managed with support provided to staff and that the relocation of animals to other suitable locations is properly supervised by the authorities.
