I am calling on NHS England to reject the proposal from NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria to turn the temporary downgrading of the Critical Care Unit at FGH into a permanent arrangement.

In September 2024, the service was temporarily downgraded due to workforce challenges at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. Until now, both the Trust and ICB had maintained that this downgrade would not be permanent and that recruitment efforts were progressing. I can see no clear justification for this new proposal, which is strongly opposed by local clinicians, patients and the wider community.

At this stage nothing has been agreed and this is only a “commissioning intention” which must be agreed by NHS England. I am campaigning to get this decision rejected and replaced with an alternative plan put in place to develop a clear roadmap for reinstating Level 3 critical care at FGH.

Please sign and share my petition to add your support and let NHS managers know the strength of feeling locally.
