Flooding can be devastating. Memories and sentimental belongings can be lost forever, damage can cost tens of thousands of pounds, and both emotionally and practically it’s a huge blow.
It was great to meet Flood Mary in Millom to learn about the ways of preventing flooding in a home. Her own experience of flooding has driven her to dedicate her time to teaching others how to protect their homes.
This is becoming increasingly important with increased risk of flooding in Millom and across Cumbria over the past few years. From flood-proof doors and flood barriers that can protect up to 0.6m water, to self-closing air bricks, pumps and paint for outdoor walls, Mary had a lot of options to prevent houses from flooding.
She also showed me low-cost solutions like aluminium tape for doors and windows, and flood sax and barriers that swell up to stop water coming through.
