Furness General Hospital is getting a brand new £1.6million state of the art CT scanner which will bring faster, more advanced diagnostics to patients across South Cumbria.
A mobile CT unit arrived on 9 February 2026 to keep services running while the old scanner is removed on 19 February. Outpatient scans — plus some inpatient and ED scans — will take place in a mobile unit during the 12 week project, with staff supporting patients to and from the scanner. Urgent scans for patients too unwell to move will continue inside the hospital using a back up CT capable scanner.
The new scanner will offer improved technology, shorter waiting times, and new scan types not previously available at FGH. It also aligns equipment across FGH, WGH and RLI, improving training and consistency for staff.
