I signed a letter of support yesterday to the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, David Lammy MP, alongside other female Labour MPs, to call for Government to continue its reform of the justice system for women and girls.
A women reporting domestic abuse today may be told her trial won’t come to court until 2030.
The treatment of women who report sexual abuse or rape to the police can put women off from reporting – they are often made to feel like they themselves are the ones accused of a crime. This is likely to contribute to the appallingly low conviction rates.
The Government are transforming the system already, such as their mission to halve violence against women and girls (VAWG) and putting victims at the centre of justice system reforms. We can’t let anything blow the Government off course.
I cannot see these changes come in soon enough.
