The Alfred Barrow Health Centre will be upgraded as the Chancellor announces new Neighbourhood Health Centres in the Budget as Labour continues work to cut waiting lists.

The Alfred Barrow Health Centre in Barrow-in-Furness is among those set for an upgrade as the Chancellor will double down on the Labour government’s commitment of continuing to slash NHS waiting times in this week’s Budget.

The upgrade cash for Alfred Barrow Health Centre has been announced today (Tuesday 25 November) ahead of tomorrow’s budget.

The creation of a new Neighbourhood Health Centre in the centre of Barrow-in-Furness will create a new health and care ‘one stop shop’ that will bring the right local combination of GPs, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other services together under one roof to best meet the needs of the community. The aim will be to prevent complications, improve access to services, and avoid the frustration of being passed around the system.

Over £7m capital funding is expected to be invested in the Alfred Barrow Health Centre project with development beginning from April 2026. The plans will see a revamp that will maximise the use of the building to ensure it delivers of a range of community health services.

The upgrade to the Alfred Barrow Health Centre is part of ongoing work by Local Labour MP, Michelle Scrogham, local health leaders, and Team Barrow, to deliver a comprehensive plan for local health service improvements.

Michelle Scrogham MP welcomed today’s announcement saying,

“This investment is part of Labour’s commitment to Barrow and Furness. This is on top of the £200m Barrow Transformation Fund and the recent announcement of £20m Pride in Place funding. It is also in addition to the extra £22m a year that has been invested in our local health trust.

“This Government is backing us to the hilt, and it means we have a once in a generation opportunity to turn round years of neglect and underfunding. Improving our health services is a huge part of that, and I have been in ongoing discussions with ministers and officials to fund a plan for local healthcare improvements.

“I am pleased that we have been able to secure this investment for the redevelopment of the Alfred Barrow Health Centre, which will be an important part of the changes that we need to see.”

A recent meeting hosted by Michelle Scrogham MP pressed for improvements in the local health care estate. The meeting was attended by (Left to Right) Andrew Bennett, NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB, Michelle Scrogham MP, Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health, Aaron Cummins, Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB, Scott McLean, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, and Peter Anstiss from Team Barrow.
